As a young man, my favorite toys were always trucks. Dump trucks, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks. What little man doesn’t love to get behind the wheel and pretend to drive? Though the video is classified as a children’s video, we found the content and subject matter to be interesting and informative for all ages.

Our 8 year old really enjoyed the robots and sparks! And it’s good to see the celebration of American Industry - the video features the manufacturing of medium duty trucks in Springfield, OH at the International Truck Plant.

I would have to say that the quality of the production is better than most of the children’s videos of this genre, and the depth and detail that they go into will make this video worth watching several times. Lots of 3D animation to illustrate concepts, and keeps it interesting. The program is almost on par with the History Channel and Discovery Channel type shows of the same genre.

There are several “Bonus Previews” on the DVD, which accounts for some of the reported runtime (the actual main Truck Video is about 30 minutes), but they are pretty substantial previews (between 5 and 7 minutes each) and include previews of the Fire Truck video of the same series, as well as “How’d They Build That? School Bus,” Concrete Truck and Military Machines.

Great value and highly recommended! Looking forward to collecting the Series!

This short documentary illuminates the “forgotten” side of Ellis Island–the medical wing which housed immigrants who arrived on the island sick or infirm; though Forgotten Ellis Island never strays from the standard PBS documentary style (talking head interviews, narration, old photos, etc.) it tells enough new information that it’s a worthy watch for history buffs.

I teach ESL in fourth grade. I had a hard time finding a documentary about Ellis Island that did not overwhelm my students with complicated language. First, I showed them parts of “Remembering Ellis Island” but it was too difficult for them. I thought this video was much better for an audience their age. It was well-structured and had great imagery to support their understanding. “Forgotten Ellis Island” serves as a good introduction to immigration.

The Road to Avonlea Series is a brilliant family friendly series fit for both the young and the old. It lacks Disney like kitschy sappiness and provides enough human substance to satisfy a stauch Krysztof Kieslowski fan like me.
My four favourite characters - I can’t choose which one I enjoy watching the most - Colleen Dewhurst (Marilla Cuthbert), Sarah Polley (Sarah Stanley), Jackie Burroughs (Hetty King) and Patricia Hamilton (Rachel Lynde) - each is a delight to behold. The rest of the cast is excellent too. I own the first two seasons on DVD so far and will preorder the subsequent releases.
The DVDs are however disappointing in that they are double sided and lack many special features. The picture quality has improved from the terrible MPEG compression artefacts of the first season boxset however. This series is highly recommended despite the technical flaws of the DVDs.

Watching this series truly brings to mind my own childhood where I used to have many happy adventures with my friends in our small town. In this second season, young Sarah Stanley & her friends find more adventures, with the introduction of some new characters.

May the Best Man win: Olivia King is wooed by two men, the reliable Jasper Dale, and the pompous ex-beau who abandoned her once before.

Family Rivalry: The other King sibling returns for a brief visit,but things are not all rosy with the King clan.

The Sea Ghost : Michael York plays an old seaman here.Gus Pike’s past returns to haunt him.

All that Glitters : the possibility of hidden treasure on the island proves too hard to resist for Sarah, Gus and friends.

Dreamer of Dreams : focuses on Jasper Dale

It’s Just a Stage: Sarah’s aunt, a famous stage actress comes to visit, with unsettling consequences.

A Mother’s Love: does one have to have experienced childbirth to be a ‘real’ mother? Avonlea is abuzz with the essay competition for Mother’s Day.

Misfits & Miracles: Ms Stacey brings a directive that the Avonlea school is to field a hockey team, and Sarah tries to learn how to skate. Also, the theme of development in the town is highlighted here.

The second season is as good or even better than the first. The storylines flow smoothly, and the acting is excellent. We also notice the development of some of the characters, such as Gus Pike, whose story is developed this season. Olivia and Jasper are edging closer to being more than friends, and Sarah is truly at home in Avonlea. This is one of my favorite television series, and reminds me of a much more innocent time, when children truly lived their childhoods, and where good values were treasured and honored.

I grew up on both the Munsters and the Addams Family, so I’ve always had much love for both shows, but when it came down to it, the Munsters was always my top pick. Maybe it was the collection of “monsters” within the family, or Marilyn, or the family’s crazy hot rods the Munster Coupe & the Dragula from legendary customizer George Barris, or just the comfort zone of the corny one-liners and family-oriented atmosphere. In any case, the Munsters is definitely classic in every sense and now it’s here on DVD!

The set’s package design is somewhat inspired. The outer box opens “coffin-style” to reveal the disc-holding “digipack” inside, as the flipped-open box top has the table of contents on it with only the episodes plus the unaired pilot listed. 38 episodes plus the unaired pilot, that’s ALOT of Munsters!

I am overjoyed at the prospect of owning The Munsters - The Complete First Season. This series has been and probably always will be one of my all-time favorite television shows. I can still remember growing up watching the afternoon reruns on WPIX from New York.

The Munsters was created by Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, the same team that brought Leave It To Beaver to television. Beaver was the quintessential American family sitcom of the late 50’s - early 60’s. Connelly and Mosher helped to establish all those nostalgic family sitcom cliches we’ve all come to love (or hate) in Leave It To Beaver then they went on to totally parody them in The Munsters. The first season opening credit sequence of The Munsters is a great example of the way they parodied the typical family sitcoms of the time. You see Lily Munster, housewife and mother, sending her brood off for the day in the same manner June Cleaver and Donna Reed did. Lily hands each of her loved ones their packed lunches or school books as she pinches their cheeks or gives them a little motherly kiss.

Although The Munsters was considered much less sophisticated than its 60s creepy TV rival, The Addams Family, it is overall a much more entertaining series to me. Although the subversive quality of The Addams Family continues to make it an entertaining series to watch as an adult, I have to admit I didn’t enjoy it as a child. The Munsters with its broad comedy and more obvious monster characters was much more fun to watch as a kid. It’s worth pointing out that even though Morticia and Gomez Addams had a fiery sexual relationship on screen, Lily and Herman Munster may have been one of the only 60s TV couples to have been seen sharing the same bed (rather than the customary twin beds).

The Munsters - The Complete First Season contains all 38 first season episodes (yes 38 shows in one season!) as well as the original unaired pilot (in color I think). It doesn’t appear that there are too many more extras in this set which is a bit disappointing. I would have loved to have seen episode commentaries by surviving cast members, documentaries, behind-the-scenes footage, etc. Hey, maybe we will get some of those extras on the Second Season set?

‘Spirit Of The Beehive’, which begins ‘Once upon a time…’, uses children’s drawings in its opening credits, anticipating the film’s key scenes, spaces and motifs. This alerts us to the child’s-eye view the film will largely take, focusing on two young sisters in s small Spanish village, Segovia, in 1940. They live in a vast, decaying mansion with their parents (a solitary, obsessive beekeeper, and a mother dreaming of her exiled lover), and servants. When James Whale’s ‘Frankenstein’ is shown in the village hall, the younger sister, Ana, is particularly haunted by the scene in which the monster plays with a little girl by the side of a lake, throwing floating daisies onto the water. Her sister tells her that the monster didn’t die in the film, but that his spirit lurks around an nearby abandoned outhouse, beside a well in an arid plain. Spotting a large footstep in the area, Ana prepares herself to meet the spirit.

Victor Erice’s film, often conidered the greatest ever made in Spain, is at once ascetic and sensual. It is ascetic in its evocation of a depleted Spain, one year after the bloody trauma of the Civil War, a place heavy with silences and suppressed emotions, parched, peeling buildings surrounded by dusty streets and outlying areas as dully stagnant as this new way of life, former granduer a dessicated memory. The film is sensual in the way this world is seen, coloured and re-imagined by the two young heroines, especially intense, dark, bow-legged Ana. The house they live in, like the beehive their father tends (grilled like a honeycomb, glowing with an amber light), is a silent, claustrophobic, ill-lit mansion, stripped of its personal decor, the kind of haunted house pregnant with silent screasm we find in late Bergman (e.g. ‘Cries and Whispers’). But while their exhausted, experience-reeling parents give up, the girls explore its mysteries like the innocent heroines of Gothic fiction or fairy tales. There is very little dialogue in the film, limited to the remnants of civilisation (school) or the elegiac confessions of letters and diaries - much of ‘Spirit’ is choreographed around brooding, pregnant, enigmatic rituals.

In a film haunted by ghosts and the charred traces of a vanished way of life, even the characters, in their movements and silences, move around familiar spaces like phantoms. The two great unspoken voids of the film - the Civil War and Franco - are only indirectly alluded to, and yet they shape this world, they are the spirit of this beehive. A necessarily symbolic and allusive work (made under the Fascists, its strategies, allegories and even style recall Eastern European films made under similar totalitarian regimes), metaphors work in complex, shifting patterns, in once sense, connecting characters in unexpected ways (trains, watches, monsters etc.), they are a further grid constricting these dead characters. On another, they magic another reality, of spirits, ghosts, memories, shadows beyond the reach of a spirit-destroying regime that would burn all records of alternative possibilities and realities. Even if it achieved nothing else - and ‘Spirit’ is one of the most potent, quietly stunning and moving films in all cinema - then Erice’s movie would be precious for rescuing ‘Frankenstein’ from camp, and restoring its austere beauty.

The opening scenes present each character in their private world. Laura, the mother, is writing a letter to a lover who may or not be merely imagined. This is her fiction.

Fernando attends his bees and in the privacy of his library meditates on the nature of existence using the beehive and the industrious workings of the bees within as a metaphor for civilization. The slightest change upsets the bees work…and being 1943 great changes have altered the fabric of life in Spain. We glimpse Fernando’s state of mind by reading his accounts of the bees daily activity and for him lifes once rich rituals it is clear have now been reduced to pointlessness and sadness.

For Laura these changes Spain has gone through have forever altered the way she sees life. She feels life can no longer be embraced and lived to the fullest as it once could.

The structure of society which would have given the parents some sense of purpose and significance has collapsed. And the way they sleepwalk through their lives leaves the children feeling like orphans. The only example they have of what life is is learned at school and in the movie theatre. The girls are particularly moved by a showing of the classic Frankenstein. For them this large melancholy figure seems strangely familiar. What they cannot fathom is why the friendly beast kills the little girl in the movie. The youngest girls mind will not be put to rest until she finds her answer.

The movie’s haunting scenes which veer between carefree innocence and haunting confrontation with stark reality are perfectly complimented by the Luis de Pablo soundtrack. One of the strangest most disturbing melodies is played by Laura herself. And throughout the film director Victor Erice’s camera will on occasion come to rest on one of the mansion’s paintings which depict man as a hopelessly lost creature among forces that are beyond his comprehension. The childrens imaginations are haunted by a world beyond their comprehension and so are the adult imaginations and so is the viewers. Victor Erice presents each life as a separate narrative and the narrative lines do not overlap. The films stark strategy emphasizes the lack of cohesion in Spanish life. Each character is lost within themselves. Poetic and stark and yet beautiful as the best Spanish poetry.

This is the last film in director Michael Cacoyannis’s Greek Tragedy trilogy after his early Sixties “Electra” (featuring Irene Pappas in the title role) and his early Seventies “The Trojan Women” (which starred Katherine Hepburn, Vanessa Redgrave, Genevieve Bujold and, once again, Irene Pappas - as Helen of Troy).

All three movies are based on the works of Euripides - who was born approximately 484 BCE and died circa 406 BCE. Out of all the ancient Greek tragedians his work has arguably the most relevance to a contemporary audience as it eloquently demonstrates the causes and nature of human suffering especially in circumstances of war or multiple murder. Despite our current familiarity with these subjects we may not always perhaps be able to fully comprehend the nature of the painful emotional consequences involved.

“Iphigenia” is significantly more low-budget than the visually impressive second film in the trilogy and yet it has it’s own considerable emotional power. Like the first film of the three it is spoken in Greek with English subtitles.

As the film opens the Greek army is waiting at Aulis for the winds to pick up in order that they may sail to Troy. But they have been waiting many months and no such winds have arrived. The troops have become restless and are on the verge of mutiny. Agamemnon - the commander in chief - has sought advice from the Oracle at Delphi as to the best solution to this problem. To his shock and horror the answer returns that in order to sail to Troy and be successful in the ensuing war he must sacrifice his beloved daughter Iphigenia.

Initially Agamemnon refuses to perform such a deed. He attempts to seek any way out that he possibly can. But eventually he is persuaded by his brother Menelaus (the abduction of whose wife Helen sparked the Trojan War) that it is a tragic but necessary solution to their impasse.

Agamemnon decides to lure Iphigenia to Aulis on the pretext that she is to marry Achilles. But little does he know that Clytemnestra (played by Irene Pappas), his strong-willed wife, has decided (against his expressed instructions) to accompany her daughter to the proposed wedding.

The first half of this film is rather unimpressive. You have the feeling you are watching a fairly cheap Greek tv movie. And yet, from the point where Iphigenia (played by a marvellous swan-necked, androgenous young Greek actress) meets Agamemnon, her tortured father, the film really takes off. Clytemnestra finds out her husband’s terrible intention and attempts to recruit Achilles as her ally in order to save her teenage daughter’s life. But the wily Odysseus, with his demagogic influence on the Greek army, stands in their way.

The final twenty minutes of the film have as much emotional power as any play or movie I have ever seen. The sheer heartbreaking dilemma of the characters is conveyed in a stunningly convincing manner. At the screening I attended many people were on the verge of tears during this concluding section. I would unreservedly recommend this film to anyone with the slightest interest in either Classical History, Greek Tragic Theatre or an emotionally fulfilling cinematic experience.

Stunning, profound, expressive. This is Michael Cacoyannis’ greatest masterpiece of three Euripidean tragedies. His first was “Electra” which was a stark drama in Black and White shot at the actual ruins of King Agamemnon’s palace at Mycenae in Southern Greece. The second was in color - “The Trojan Woman” - a disturbing portrait of men’s cruelty to the vanquished in war. The third, my personal favorite, is this film. While it involves the sweep of historical events, it remains focused on a highly intense family drama - a heart wrenching decision between duty versus love.

What is the story of Iphigenia? Agamemnon assumes the honor,duty, and responsibility of leading the troops of Greece to war with Troy so as to avenge his brother’s mistreatment by a Trojan prince. Having killed a sacred deer of the goddess (Artemis), the King discovers the winds will not blow for the Greeks. That means his battle ships cannot launch. To persuade the Gods to give him the wind to victory, the King learns he must sacrifice that person most dear to him, his innocent and

virginal daughter, Iphiginia. Agamemnon’s reaction when he discovers the terrible choice he must make is a frightful anger. He clearly does not want to lose his flesh and blood, his innocence, but he is also realizes he is asking his troops to risk death in the upcoming war. Ultimately, and reluctantly, he chooses death for his daughter. Eventually she discovers her terrible destiny…as does her mother Clytemnestra. The mother refuses to allow it, but Iphigenia sees the honor of being martyred and chooses to die…and therefore to live for Greece.

The last moment of the film is everything Greek tragedy should be. We see the knife, Agamemnon’s stark reaction to the horror, and the wind blows at long last.

Part of the power of the film comes from the stark locations…Here we don’t see sumptuous palaces in, let’s say, Richard Burton’s “Helen of Troy.” Instead, the action is filmed in the rough landscapes of Greece reflecting the tough, untamed ancient world. And the cast…the cast is magnificent. Tatiana Papamoskou is beautiful and fair…yet she radiates something more…a real heroism. The King, played by Kostas Kazakos, is vital, brutal, charismatic, and surprisingly protective of his daughter. His wife, Irene Papas, plays the profoundly strong Greek woman to the core.

I cannot imagine anyone who won’t be moved by these stirring performances. Highly recommended.

Roy Scheider returns as the police chief of Amity, a resort town somewhere in New England, which has been terrorized by a Great white Shark (GWS)

The excellent music composed by John Williams will always make me think of JAWS.

Watch out for the seabirds, they’ll know when the GWS is around.

The parasailing shown reminded me of using a bobber while fishing or fly fishing for trout… The skier was like trolling for marlin. When the ski boat blows up there is no direct evidence of what happened and of course the mayor and the city council don’t want to believe. The police chief is fired. He didn’t help himself when he cleared the beach and shot at a school of blue fish.

Throughout the movie the GWS is anthropomorphized so that we / the movie makers give him almost human intelligence.

Not recommended for anyone who wants to swim in the ocean. For me it’s swimming pools from now on, Baby.

To believe that any effort to make a ‘Jaws’ sequel could compare with the impact of Steven Spielberg’s original was a doomed notion even in 1978: the original was and is a cinematic classic of the highest order (despite having spent much of the ’90s in almost-infinite rerun on the Turner networks), so much so that no sequel would ever have been able to measure up to its legacy. What happened basically is this: Universal execs saw the budget and schedule for ‘Jaws’ balloon so badly because of all its production troubles that they told Spielberg he’d never work in Hollywood again, UNTIL the movie was released and broke every box-office record imaginable. As they are wont to do in the face of staggering profit, these moneymongers quickly turned keel and told Spielberg they were behind him 100 percent the whole time and they wanted to know when he was planning to start shooting ‘Jaws 2′. Spielberg, being smart, said ‘No thanks’, so the execs decided to go ahead with ‘Jaws 2′ without him. BIG mistake.
Thankfully, though, producers Richard Zanuck and David Brown remained in charge of things, and got the highly-underrated director Jeannot Szwarc to try to pick up the pieces, even going so far as to re-enlist the incomparable John Williams to score the film. The end result is a sequel that is essentially the ‘Jurassic Park 2′ of its day - critically landblasted, commercially eschewed, yet despite its dramatic idiosyncracies and the impossibility of competing with the original film, proves to be an entertaining follow-up nonetheless.
Much of the original cast returns, save Richard Dreyfuss (who, like Spielberg, was smart enough to know when to pass) and Robert Shaw (who, apart from his character being killed in the original, had himself died of a heart attack in 1978). But Roy Scheider’s return is the saving grace here, as now he’s given new dimensions to his character: his growing spite toward his wife’s boss, his desperation in trying to prove that a new shark has arrived despite a more skeptical public this time around (since sharks rarely attack the same place twice, you can’t really blame them). The acting remains solid in ‘Jaws 2′ - Murray Hamilton’s character is a refreshing surprise, still just as disbelieving yet he can’t help but be a little sympathetic for Brody this time - and remains that way even during the straining final hour of the film when Szwarc has to resort to the all-out terror of having the teenage daysailers menaced by the monolithic maneater.
Then there’s the whole aspect of the shark itself. Since there’s only so many times you can have a different giant shark attack the same island, the movie stretches its premise to the maximum level of plausibility. The shark’s feats this time around are, to say the least, improbable - outrunning a speedboat and being able to sink a mini-copter, in particular - but Szwarc captures them on film quite well, and their absurdity pales in comparison to what we get in the last two entries in the series. And Szwarc and screenwriters Carl Gottlieb (returning from the original) and Howard Sackler (who contributed to the original but turned down screen credit) send their shark out in a death scene that has much more panache than the ’shoot-the-scuba-tank-stuck-in-its-mouth’ gag.
‘Jaws 2′ has its bland and silly moments, but if you loved the suspense of the original, then this entry in the series is about the only follow-up that you might find truly worth your time and money.

When you think about it, many ‘hood movies dropped around the early 90’s, like “Boyz N The Hood”, “New Jack City”, “Menace II Society” etc. All of these got the recognition they deserved, and they have all stood the test of time, as all of them are over 10 years old. However, there is one movie that didn’t get the recognition and publicity that it should have. This is the 1991 “South Central”. South Central is a great hood movie with a different twist to it than the others I mentioned. It is also very touching in certain places. It takes place in Los Angelas just like almost all these other hood movies so that’s no surprise.

The movie starts off with a young Bobby Johnson getting out of jail. After fighting with a local drug-dealer over his girlfriend, he kills the drug-dealer who’s name is Genie Lamp. He lays low for a few months, then he decides to ride out with a few other members of the Deuce gang, which he is part of. They pick up an undercover cop along the way, and she busts them for possession. While the newly proclaimed “OG” Bobby Johnson is being interrogated by the police, his fingerprints match the prints on the silencer and the gun he used to kill Genie Lamp. He takes the blame for everything and doesn’t drop any names of the other members of the Deuce gang. Due to that he has to serve a decade in prison. There he finds from Loco, and old Deuce friend, that his own son was becoming a Deuce and that he was stealing stereos for Ray Ray, the leader of the Deuce gang. The rest of the movie is centered around Bobby trying to get his son out of the gang life and keeping him from making the same mistakes he did. Can Bobby convince his son that being in a gang is not worth the price you pay? Or is it too late for Jimmie (His son’s name) to get out of his lifestyle?

The acting is OK, but not too memorable. Glenn Plummer, who also played Parnell is Menace II Society, did an excellent job as OG Bobby Johnson. Christian Coleman as Jimmie “J-Rock” Johnson did an exceptional job for a child actor, but at times it seems as if he kinda overacts a lil bit. At some scenes he’s a little bit too enthusiastic with his dialogue (I don’t know maybe they wanted it to be like that). Larita Shelby as Bobby’s girlfriend Carol was exceptional as well, but she kinda overacted too. However, at the parts where she was messed up on PCP and at the times when she was pissed the acting came through quite well. Byron Minns did a great job as Ray Ray. I feel he captured the character pretty well. Overall I’d say the acting was decent, I’ve seen better but I’ve definitely seen worse.

So, I’d say if you’re a fan of hood movies or gangster movies this would appeal to you. Don’t expect the greatness of Juice or Boyz or Menace though. But this is highly entertaining and definitely worth a rent, and even a buy because you can probably buy it very cheap now (I bought it at my local Best Buy for 5.99). Now that I think about it though, you probably won’t find it in video stores, so I’d say find a month when it’s coming on BET to see if you like it. BET plays it from time to time. I would check it out if these types of movies interest you. It’s good for its genre. 4 Stars.

This adaptation of Donald Bakeer’s novel, “South Central L.A. Crips”, showed the human side of L.A. gang members (Crips) thru Glen Plummer’s memorable portrayal of an O.G. (original) Crip who came back from prison to save his son from a similar fate. The last scene is one of the best in all of black film making. This, the first portrayal of the human side of Crips, fulfilled “Variety’s” prediction that it would save lives. South Central which debuted soon after the L.A. Uprising (7/92) had a great impact on L.A. gang and would-be gang members. It and Bakeer’s novel are a must for anyone who seriously studies the gang wars that killed thousands of youths in America during the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

A sterling cast headed by Oscar - nominated Susan Sarandon makes this slick thriller the adaptation of a John Grisham bestseller. Mark Sway (Brad Renfro) witnesses the suicide of a Mafia lawyer, who confesses that the mob was behind the murder of a U.S. senator. Mark’s brother is traumatized into a coma by the incident; gangster Barry Muldano (Anthony LaPaglia) is soon on Mark’s trail, and in desperation, he arrives at the office of recovering alcoholic lawyer Reggie Love (Sarandon). With the mob after them, and a ruthless federal attorney Roy Foltrig (Tommy Lee Jones) trying to force Mark to reveal what he knows, Love battles to guarantee the safety of her client and his family. The relationship between Reggie Love and Mark Sway is the center of the film, adding considerable character development to plot’s routine elements. Director Joel Schumacher helmed another Grisham adaptation, A Time To Kill, in 1996.

You gotta hand it to John Grisham: Nobody has the various lawyer cliches down pat as well as him - in fact, it almost seems as if he invented or at least, reinvented many of them. As in most of his thrillers, we get a whole handful in “The Client”: the slimy mafia lawyer, the power-hungry politician-to-be, the self-aggrandizing ambulance-chaser, the grandfatherly judge and, of course, the motherly family law practitioner who turned to legal practice after overcoming a few troubles of her own. I think that leaves only the greedy corporate attorney, his cousin the corrupt judge and their perpetual antagonists, the starving public interest lawyer and the inquisitive student prodigy unrepresented here; but still, not a bad collection for a single thriller, even by Grisham. (And that doesn’t even include the count of dumb and/or malicious cops, slick tabloid journalists and ruthless mobsters running around in this story.) But never mind: “The Client” is one of John Grisham’s best-ever novels, and this movie surpasses many another big-screen adaptation of his books by several leagues. For Grisham at the top of his game is also an excellent storyteller, and in the hands of director Joel Schumacher his tale of beleaguered eleven-year-old Mark Sway who gets in trouble by becoming the reluctant last confidant of suicidal defense attorney Jerome “Romey” Clifford comes to life in spot-on and truly gripping fashion.

Although not even a teenager yet, Mark (Brad Renfro) is as tough as they come - a Memphis trailer park kid who gets most of his education on life’s really important aspects from TV, has already helped his mom (Mary-Louise Parker) get rid of the wife-beating guy he now calls his “ex-father,” and since then has been the man in the house, taking care of his eight-year-old brother Ricky whenever their mother is at work (i.e., most of the time). So Mark doesn’t scare easily; and even if he really is afraid, he’d rather drop dead than admit it. But with both the mob *and* the feds on his trail - the former out to kill him before he can share the dirty little secret they suspect Romey has spilled before blowing out his brains, the latter hell-bent on making him share that very secret - even Mark has to face the fact that he is in way over his head … and yes, he’s scared, too; and not just a little. Worse, his brother is out cold, in hospital being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder because watching Romey’s suicide was more than his delicate eight-year-old soul could take, and their mother is in hospital with Ricky on the doctor’s orders because Ricky might need her when he wakes up. (Consequently she’s also out of a job, because her sweat-shop employer doesn’t take kindly to this sort of family emergency). Reluctantly, Mark therefore concludes that he needs an attorney. And in short order, he lands on the doorstep of Regina “Reggie” Love (Susan Sarandon), middle-aged but only a few years out of law school, through which she put herself after her husband left her for a younger woman, not without depriving her of their children’s custody and branding her an unfit mother. But what starts as a hesitant relationship at best on Mark’s side soon turns out his one stroke of luck, because Reggie is probably the only lawyer in town not afraid to take on even powerful U.S. Attorney “Reverend” Roy Foltrigg (Tommy Lee Jones) and the FBI, and ultimately willing to put her own job at risk for her client.

While condensing some of its elements, the movie’s screenplay follows Grisham’s novel fairly closely, taking part of its dialogue straight from the book. Yet, “The Client” lives not only from John Grisham’s gripping story but also - and primarily - from its characters and outstanding cast, including the ever-reliable J.T. Walsh (FBI Agent McThune), William H. Macy (Ricky’s doctor), Anthony Edwards (Reggie’s assistant Clint), Ossie Davis (Judge Roosevelt) and Walter Olkewicz (”Romey” Clifford). Unquestioningly most memorable, however, is the quintet at the movie’s center. Brad Renfro was selected by Schumacher for his first-ever screen appearance as Mark because he had a somewhat similar background as the story’s hero and thus, an intuitive understanding that, along with his innate toughness, ultimately proved more convincing than the acting skills of more experienced child actors; and indeed, he so compellingly carries his part that he deservedly garnered a 1995 Young Artists Award. Susan Sarandon earned another Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Reggie, who actually listens to her clients and makes sure even those of their desires that may seem trivial to others are taken care of; such as Dianne Sway’s wish for a walk-in closet. (Sarandon’s Academy-Award nomination was her fourth after “Atlantic City,” “Thelma & Louise” and “Lorenzo’s Oil;” but although she had to wait yet another year to finally score an Oscar with “Dead Man Walking,” “The Client” at least won her a BAFTA Award). Tommy Lee Jones plays the bible-quoting Foltrigg with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek and thus, although occasionally terrifying, makes him a more complete and almost even likeable character; much more so than he is in Grisham’s novel. Mary-Louise Parker’s Dianne Sway truly brings to life the young besieged trailer park mom desperately trying to get a grip on her life, and Anthony LaPaglia finally is simultaneously frightening and unintentionally funny as the slick but not overly bright mob killer Barry “The Blade” Muldanno, the source of Clifford’s (and consequently everybody else’s) problems.

So, watch this for the outstanding performances of the five central characters as well as the fine ensemble cast, for one of John Grisham’s most gripping yarns, and for Joel Schumacher’s excellent editing and sense of place. This may not be a major milestone in movie history (except regarding Brad Renfro’s career of course), but it’s without question one of the best thrillers of the past 15 years and easily recommended on that basis alone.

I was searching for a video collection for the family library that showcased our National Parks and I found this product to be the perfect choice. The product I purchased is on DVD and, as viewed on a 42″ plasma TV, I rate the production quality as top shelf. The scenery was exceptional and the commentary was quite educational. To gauge the entertainment value I can say the content was sufficient to hold the interest of my three boys, ages eight, ten and twelve.
