I wasn’t entirely versed on the Charles Manson murders so this movie was, first of all, terrifyingly eye-opening for me. This is seriously one of the creepiest murders not only in Hollywood history but in American history, and the documentary retells the story in chilling detail with all the gruesome images to accompany it. Yes, the film is historically accurate and educational, but it is also surprisingly edge-of-your-seat and scary! If you’re waiting for a calm moment to take that next bite of popcorn, you’re going to be waiting a long time (like I was)! I watched this movie with friends for two different movie nights and everyone was successfully creeped out and impressed!! Buy this movie, you won’t be disappointed!

Released originally in 1957, newly restored this year, Louis Malle’s (“Pretty Baby”) gorgeous “Elevator to the Gallows” (“Ascenseur pour l’Echafaud”) is ultimately more flash than substance: many scenes were filmed with natural light (shades of Dogma95?) and Jeanne Moreau’s penultimate scene walking down the Champs Elysees light only from the glare of the shop windows that she passes is stunning in its simple, shadowy beauty. Paris, in many ways has never looked more beautiful or more sinister.

The plot revolves around two couples: Florence Carala (Moreau), her paramour Julien (Maurice Ronet) and two juvenile delinquents, Veronique (Yori Bertin) and Louis (Georges Poujouly)…who steal Julien’s car. The quartet meet only at the conclusion of the film though their actions definitely affect each other earlier.

There is also intrigue involving Julien and Florence’s husband Simon Carala (Jean Wall) and their participation in war profiteering in the Indochina War (it is 1957, after all). But the plot takes a back seat to the mise en scene as Malle’s camera and the mood take precedence over plot development and plot logic.

“Elevator to the Gallows” (a very witty title, by-the-way) is at times breathtakingly beautiful to behold: Decae’s moody camerawork and Miles Davis’ score and trumpet work are brilliant. And as a precursor to the emotional depth, flash and profundity of what was soon to arrive, “Elevator to the Gallows” is an important piece of the wonderful puzzle that was to become the French New Wave a few years hence.

French New Wave at it’s best? Louis Malle’s first film has been considered one of the first if not the first film of the French New Wave and either way is certainly one of the best. The story has Hitchcockian undertones to it; A man kills his lover’s husband and then gets trapped in the elevator while fleeing the scene. The tension mounts as the man’s lover, Jeanne Moreau and the audience wait to see if he will escape or get caught. Like the early films of the new wave there are many shots of and around Paris. However Malle made one of the best decisions in cinematic history by having Miles Davis do the soundtrack. Miles gives those scenes in Paris and the entire film a quality that is indescribable. For those who admire the films of Godard, Truffaut or Varda will love this unbelievable piece of cinema. However this film is not available on DVD. Cannot for the life of me imagine why. Criterion please help!!! The soundtrack on its own is amazing and for jazz fans should be purchased immediately. I looked for it forever and it has finally been released on CD.

Finally–the great Errol Flynn is becoming available on DVD. One can only hope that Warner Bros. will be releasing more classic Flynn titles in the near future. Except for late in his career, when Errol’s excessive lifestyle took its toll, we are looking at one of the most exciting stars to ever grace the “silver screen”.

As other reviews will tell you, this is a truly memorable World War II drama about American soldiers successfully accomplishing a dangerous mission against the Japanese in the jungles of Burma, only to face the daunting task of returning to home base alive. The film is exciting, touching, sad and uplifting–and if ever there was an actor that men might follow even through the gates of hell, it is Errol Flynn. I agree that this is one of his best performances. At first, we get the famous Flynn bravado, but as the story progresses, we see more desperate human qualities and ultimately a world-weary resignation. The scene where he discovers that one of his men has been tortured to death does not really show the victim–it doesn’t have to–the horror and disbelief on Flynn’s face says it all.

The film is long–but even when there is no action taking place, the combination of suspense and sharply-drawn characters keeps a firm grip on your attention. You can feel that oppressive heat–the dense jungle–the biting insects–and the constant threat of a ruthless enemy. In many ways the atmosphere foreshadows another nasty war for Americans, in another Asian jungle, some twenty years later.

The DVD is excellent–the picture is very clear and stable for a 58-year old film.

I know that this movie was vilified in the UK for ignoring the huge role played by British troops in this theatre of the war. I don’t pass historical judgments–I simply review the film. As such, “Objective Burma” is a powerful statement, and an excellent vehicle for a truly great star.

Raoul Walsh directed this gruelling, gritty, compelling war story, produced during World War Two, as the fight in the Pacific was still in full swing. Errol Flynn, in one of his least glamorous roles, stars as a hard-bitten Captain in charge of an American paratrooper unit that gets sent on a commando mission into Japanese-occupied Burma. They easily achieve their goal of destroying a strategic radar post, but are decimated while trying to return from enemy territory. The film is remorselessly well paced, tense, and manages to transcend the conventions of Hollywood’s WWII combat melodramas: it is propagandistic and uses certain formulas, but it is also earthy and anxiety-provoking in a way that the grade-B war films of the era were not. The predicament of the soldiers — stranded behind enemy lines and cut off from their support — is made visceral in a way which few movies manage to convey, making this film a clear precursor to “Platoon” and “Black Hawk Down.” It’s bleak tone and realistic portrayal of the foot soldiers, with their dark humor and fatalistic resolve, all rings true. Highly recommended.

This movie is one of the most revealing of the century. It’s ruthless, conniving, sly, smart, irreverent, stupid, and funny as hell. It’ll slam your beliefs, way of life, and everything else you hold dear to your heart. That’s exactly why you have to love it. You have to respect a movie that can do all of that in an hour and a half. If you want to get one of the best comedic movies of the summer, don’t look for American pies or spies who shag people. Look for the movie about 4 demented children and their even more impudent townspeople. It’ll be one of the best movies you’ll ever see, and I guarantee it WILL PISS YOU OFF. I’m a die-hard South Park fan, and even I was offended by some of the dialouge. But that’s exactly what these boys are designed to do, and I love ‘em for it. Many people will try to make you believe that South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut just relies on how much shock it can garner from it’s audience. Don’t fall into that way of thinking: it actually has very touching messages hidden in the sea of profanity and lewdness. And isn’t it always more rewarding when you have to find the messages for yourself instead of getting it served to you on a silver platter? Parents, tuck your children in early if you want to watch it. Kids, see it at your friend’s house. In my personal opinion, I would nominate this movie for several Oscars: Best Picture of the year, Best musical score in a movie, and Best Director (Trey Parker). Everyone I have ever talked to about this movie say that it’s appalling in retrospect. However, they always have to admit: those little guys are funny.

Simply amazing. You can say that it is nothing but fart jokes and toilet humor, but it is so obviously much more than that. What Trey Parker and Matt Stone have done is created one of the most thought provoking and clever comedies of all time and the greatest musical of the decade. Not only is it truly hilarious, it is also one of the most controversial movies of all time. It is mocking the hypocrisies of the MPAA and the average American parenting, as well as many other countless subjects. Not that it isn’t a bad thing I would have rated it the day I saw it, but I decided to look it over more carefully to see all the undertones that it contains. It is also a great musical. With the help of Marc Shaiman, Trey has created greats like “Mountain Town”, the infamous “Uncle F**ker”, the Oscar-nominated “Blame Canada”, the Les Miserables parody “La Resistance Lives On”, and the Disney-based “Up There”. However, it is definitely not for children and actually holds the world record for the most profanity in an animated movie, with 399 swear words, 221 acts of violence, and 128 offensive gestures. This wanton swearing is objectionable, but that aside, this is one of the greatest movies of all time, and not even the angry parents can deny it.

Though we enjoyed the IMAX Kilimanjaro film, it fairly well glossed over the difficulties of climbing the mountain, and pretty much ignored the porters who labor climbers up the mountain. This Nova special is a bit more realistic, and brought back memories of my Kili climb two years ago. The scripting is a bit hokey, and they use the term “high altitude mountaineering” with annoying regularity… “high altitude trekking” would be more accurate. At any rate, it’s an interesting film, and discusses the problems on the mountain associated with global warming and climate change. The quality isn’t IMAX, but it’s still pretty good, and worth having a look.

In 99…I climbed the small beast. The doc. is pretty good–if I had not actually endeavoured in climbing Kili…I would give this 5 stars. But-I am jadded…as once you have been there…nothing can truly reflect the awesome magnitude of the mountain. But for those who cannot get there, this may be the next best thing—

“Santa” brought the Wiggles “Wiggle Time” video to our house and my two daughters (ages 2 1/2 and 5 years of age) LOVED it, as did all of their friends. I particularly liked that the girls were up dancing and actually getting some exercise during the entire video, unlike most videos where kids are inclined to just sit and watch. For that reason I immediately ordered the “Yummmy Yummy” video.

The girls do love this one but my primary reason for ordering it . . . the “stand-up, dance and move” rather than “sit and stare” factor . . . isn’t nearly as good in this one. There is much more down-time (as in ‘sit down’) on this one.

Still, THEY do enjoy it. If I were choosing between this or Wiggle Time as a parent, I’d recommend that you choose “Wiggle Time” in a heart beat for your kids, for gifts, etc.

Also, I do agree that the puppets are kind of creepy and, while they don’t bother my children, they don’t really keep their attention either.

They definitely love the upbeat tunes contained on this video though, every one of them.

After seeing the previews on Barney Videos we bought the video tapes. We’ve had Yummy Yummy for about 2 weeks now and my son absolutely loves them. However there are a couple of scenes that frighten him. there are Puppets who are suppose to look like the characters on this show performing a song. They are a frightening portrayal of the 4 characters. When their scene come up, my 2 year old says “Scary..” and covers his eyes while I fast forward the scene . It gets scarier as you watch it in fast-forward. Other than that my son is enthralled with the Wiggles & always asks to watch it before & after day care. It is a video with lots of physical participation. My husband & I end up joining our son with all the dance moves. It is so great seeing our son’s face light up when we put on their ( the WIggles ) video tape. We also purcahsed Wiggle Time. Our son loves that video and we have just currently ordered Wake Up Jeff. We can’t wait.

I’m a huge Voltron fan from way back. I loved this comic book when it came out and was dissapointed that it ended before it’s time. Now, for the review. Ever wonder why there aren’t more comics turned into DVD versions? Yeah, that’s cause it kind of sucks. Yeah, it’s nice to hear all the sounds and music. But it’s just the art from the comic manipulated to give a sense of animation. Lips don’t move which is a little disorienting since you almost think people are talking in an inner monologue.

If you love the comic, just read the comic. The music and sound fx in your head will be way better than anything on this disc.

Avoid this at all cost. For what I paid to get a bunch of images with lousy voice acting turned out to be an unwise purchase. I like Voltron and never really had any of it’s movies. I may have recorded some of the tv shows back in the day but this was my first purchase and I’m writing this to warn all of you that it’s bad. Real bad. I don’t even think it deserves 1 star. No real animation, like the description says, it’s called comics animation. It’s where the images you would see in a comic book is moving some but there is no motion within the subjects of the film. But what makes this title even worse is the acting. Sounds like 1 person is voicing 3 of the characters (maybe more) and not doing a good job at it. Don’t waste your money…or time. This is the first time I ever bought a DVD and trashed it right after watching.

I am not a believer in plopping a kid in front of a TV to occupy their time; however, there are times when “quiet time” in front of a TV is appropriate. Most importantly for me, these videos are both educational and calming; and, the selection of the multi-pack provides variety. I bought stage 2 first due to the subject matter.

My kids didn’t know I was getting them this movie called “Gooby” because I was keeping it a real secret from them. Lucky for me, a few days after the movie’s official release, K-Mart already had the DVD in the $2.99 n’ Under Bargain Area, so I snatched it up and wrapped it up and waited for a special day to reveal the DVD to my children. I wished it was on VHS because we only have a VCR and I have to borrow a DVD player from a neighbor whenever we rent or buy DVD’s, but I figured this was a special occasion so “why the heck not?”

So just when the time was right (on the anniversary of a family member’s death), I made a big deal and unwrapped the “Gooby” DVD in front of my children. Their first reactions were things like, “What is that bear on there?” and “Do we have to watch this now?” My kids had no idea what they were in for (obviously!), but I had a hunch we were all in for a treat.

So I sat them down, figured out the DVD thing, and started the movie. An hour later, I found myself enjoying the movie so much, I didn’t notice that one of my kids had fallen asleep, another was reading comic books, and my other one had left the house (apparently).

So I rounded them up again and started the movie over (even though I really wanted to know how it ended) and I made them watch the movie front to back, beginning to finish, like my dad taught me how to watch movies a long time ago (before he died).

Which brings me to another good point of this movie and that is fathers. Gooby learns that having a dad and being a dad are sometimes different things and he tries to teach the child in the movie that, too. I think that was a nice thing for the writers to write into the movie. Things like that are cool for people of any age to know!

Now, I may be a father of 3 teenage boys and girls, but I think I know a good family movie when I see one and this is it! I am a “Gooby” fan for life and I promise to make sure my family watches this movie every holiday so we can keep remembering Gooby’s lessons about love, family, and relationships.

I have only one question/regret and that is how the movie ends, with Gooby getting back into his spaceship and saying that he is going to find E.T. and Alf to start a band. I think that was a silly part that might be confusing for children who might not know who those other alien beings are. So I hope in the sequel “Gooby 2,” they choose to go in a different direction with the story. Also, I think some of the deaths in the movie were handled strangely and more attention needs to be paid to that detail in future versions of this movie.

It’s a wonderful family film depicting the insecurities of a child made worse by new, unfamiliar surroundings and how a make-believe friend helps him grow up and gain confidence. Also, portrays busy professinal parents who love their child, but miss the most important element in their family – giving of themselves and time spent together rather than material possessions.

After the release of Volumes 1 & 2 most fans were ecstatic to be able to own the first three and a half seasons of this classic animated series on studio released DVD. The problem with Disney is you can never tell if they will finish releasing a series or cancel it because of poor sales or God knows why. Luckily fans of this series will be able to collect more episodes this September 22nd with the further release of X-men: The Animated Series with Volumes 3 & 4. Really every episode from this series can be considered a fan favorite but more noticable in this collection is the four part Beyond Good and Evil saga as well as The Phalanx Covenant, Sanctuary and Family Ties.

The audio & video quality we can expect will be the same as that of the first two volumes. Episodes tended to be in the same quality they aired with minor compression issues that go unnoticed by most and didn’t impede on my personal viewing enjoyment. Also the further we go into the series we should notice a slow steady improvement on the actual animation quality of the show.

There are no special features on these volumes but given the fact we’re dealing with Disney that’s to be expected. Television was better in the nineties. Thanks for your time.

In my opinion, X-Men, Batman TAS, Spider-Man, Animaniacs, Power Rangers, Eek the Cat, Bobby’s World, Tiny Toons and all the other shows that were featured on Fox Kids were the very best shows. X-Men, in spite of being a Saturday morning cartoon gathered very high ratings. In fact, it was so successful that it ran for a whopping 76 episodes with a total of 5 seasons, all the way from 1992 to 1997. In fact, it is the longest running Marvel animated show with Spider-Man being the second longest. X-Men has often been compared to Batman the Animated Series in terms of quality.

We can now witness more adventure as episodes from season 3 and 4 are now being released. X-Men closely followed some storylines from the comics. In this one, we witness Magneto building Asteroid M, a sanctuary for mutants, Wolverine battle Silver Samurai and the X-Men even clash in an epic battle with the immortal god-like mutant Apocalypse as he plans to reshape the universe in his own evil ways. We’ll even encounter Mr.Sinister as he teams with Apocalypse and Magneto who reluctantly battle along side the X-Men to battle Apocalypse.

X-Men is something for all ages. Kid and teens will love the action and adventure, while adults will appreciate the well written episodes and how some of them follow the comics. And of course, everybody will appreciate the top-quality animation created by some of the greatest animation studios of the day and everyone will love the nicely drawn awesome looking characters who bear great resemblance to the X-Men of comic book artist Jim Lee and writer Chris Claremont.

In case you’re a fan of X-Men, Marvel, good action, emotional scenes or epic battles of good vs evil or if you even watched this on Fox Kids during the fantastic era of the 90s, don’t miss X-Men! If you got the first volume and volume 2, then I,m sure you’ll adore volume 3 and volume 4 and if you haven’t experienced X-Men, it might just be a good time to grab both new volumes and prepare for epic adventures featuring Marvel’s mutant team.

Sanctuary Part 1: Magneto establishes a sanctuary in space known as Asteroid M. But when the mutant Fabian Cortez overthrows him and takes over, the X-Men are called for assistance.

Sanctuary Part 2: As the X-Men battle Cortez who temps to take over Asteroid M, Magneto returns to reclaim his place on the throne.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 1: As Cyclops and Jean prepare to wed, Mr.Sinister drops by and kidnaps Jean and takes her to an unknown world and learns that Apocalypse has plans for her.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 2: The X-Men figure out that Apocalypse is after Psylocke and other mutants who posses telepathic abilities. They even have a run in with Angel. The X-Men must figure out why Apocalypse is after psychics.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 3: Professor Xavier and the X-Men are taken to a place known as the Axis of Time and realizes that Apocalypse plans to use the psychics to recreate the universe in his own will. Cable heads to the Axis of Time to stop Apocalypse once and for all.

Beyond Good and Evil Part 4: In the final part of this episode, an epic battle between the X-Men, the psychics, Cable and Apocalypse will decide the fate of the immortal mutant once and for all.
