I havn’t actually been able to watch this DVD all the way through. The gross overuse (abuse) of video transitions (2 and 3 videos on top of each other most the time) nauseates me (I’m not kidding!) I finally “covered” my tv screen and listened to the audio once though. No music track is ever played all the way through, and usually has “special effects” (thunder, train, gun sounds, etc) or the narrators voice over the top of the music. The information this DVD offers is minimal, more someones opinions than any actual facts. And much of the information is incorrect and unfounded.

As a blues musician myself for over 44 years I find the narrators insistence that “white people” don’t have the ability to play or sing blues music ignorant and offensive.

I’ll grudgingly give this DVD two stars merely for the soundtrack which is, of course, great (and 95% public domain recordings, no doubt!). In fact, the vast majority of this presentation consists of public domain recordings set to sloppily produced visuals. Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of Windows Movie Maker could have produced the visuals for this DVD. There are no archive film or videotape performances of Blues artists themselves in this presentation! The narration is amateurish and unenlightening. Dry monotone readings briefly bridging poorly made “music videos”. The overall presentation appears to have been done on the cheap. The DVD transfer quality is lacking, with a low bitrate and the resultant blocking in the picture. This is not what I would refer to as a documentary. One really comes away from the presentation learning nothing further about the Blues. This would be passable as a high school project in documentary-making, but not as a DVD on-sale to the public. It would be more advisable (and cost-efficient) to buy any “History of the Blues” compilation CD (which was undoubtedly the same investment poured into this DVD’s production budget) than to waste your time with this. Some quality control would have wisely kept this product off of Amazon’s inventory.

Season four is the 1991-92 season that won Laurie Metcalf her first of three consecutive EMMY Awards as Best Supporting Comedic Actress. (Roseanne would finally win her only Best Actress-Comedy EMMY for season five; and John Goodman–shockingly–never won an EMMY for playing Dan Connor altho he was nominated seven years in a row!).

FINALLY, for this fourth season set, there are at last commentaries by Roseanne! And even better, they are video-commentaries, which means you actually watch Roseanne live on the right-side of your TV screen as she watches and comments on the episode playing on the (larger) left side of your screen. The two episodes she comments on are TRICK ME UP TRICK ME DOWN (that season’s Halloween episode, which also marked the final appearance of George Clooney as Booker–and Roseanne has some great, sharp comments on the fact that her series’s writers didn’t appreciate Clooney the way she did) and THANKSGIVING ’91 (with guests Shelley WInters and Estelle Parsons). These are wonderful commentaries, very funny, very honest and Roseanne’s comments are aided by some pop-up blurbs at the bottom of the screen that sometimes corrects or elaborates on something Roseanne has said. (For instance, Roseanne says Shelley Winters wasnt too happy about playing Parson’s mother because she was only a few years older than Parsons. The pop-up track tells us that WInters was seven years older than Parsons.)

The second extra is a brief on-camera interview with Roseanne about the show. It’s spirited and fun and filled with clips. The final extra is called “A Grown-Up Sit Down Interview with “an Adult” Becky and D.J. It’s merely a condensed and reedited compilation of the interview Michael Fishman did for the season two set and the interview Lecky Goranson did for the season three set. It offers no new material and is just a rehash of previously seen footage.

Even thought Roseanne ends each commentary track with the same statement of “Am I done?”, I hope that the next sets have even more video commentaries. This is a terrific DVD set.

Seems like Amazon didn’t take the time to list the episode titles for us, so I’ll take a crack at it. “BOO!”, being the most dimented and memorable episode for me & my sister, wins the title spot for my “review”. p.s. Most TV shows can be found on imdb.com, though beware of occasional glitches in the descriptions (mainly die-hard fans notice these errors and are able to report them for correction).

“Inherit the Wind” – Becky “lays down the law” in front of the whole student council, including the boy she has a date with that night, Jimmy Meltrigger.

“Little Sister” – Jackie defends her decision to enroll in the police academy.

“Guilt by Disassociation” – Roseanne gets a job “psych” when the job offer she thought she had is quickly revoked because she lacks computer skills.

“Somebody Stole My Gal” – While doing some office work at Dan’s construction site, Roseanne impresses the architect who turns out to be a needy, yet generous loner latching onto the Conner family.

“House of Grown-Ups” – Jackie prepares for 6 weeks at the police academy while Becky takes Darlene – or shall I say Vivienne – to her first co-ed party.

“Five of a Kind” – Arnie plants a kiss on Roseanne leaving her to wonder what it could mean.

“BOO!” – DJ welcomes trick-or-treaters to the Conner’s “tunnel of terror”, while Dan and Roseanne try to “out trick” each other.

“Sweet Dreams” – Roseanne’s first attempt at a fantasy episode as she tries to get a few minutes of peace in the tub.

“We Gather Together” – Another dysfunctional Thanksgiving on Delaware St. as Roseanne tries to find a way to tell her parents she prefers they stay at a motel.

“Brain-Dead Poets Society” – Darlene’s insightful poem brings Roseanne and Jackie to tears at the middle school’s talent night.

“Lobocop” – Roseanne’s 2nd job as a Lobo bartender takes a toll on her lovelife until Dan comes in & picks her up.

“No Talking” – Classic teen daughter/mom rivalry with a little “good cop (Dan), bad cop (Roseanne) mixed in.

“Chicken Hearts” – Roseanne finds herself cow-towing to her teenaged boss (the “little maggot”) in order to get weekends off.

“One for the Road” – When the folks are away…Becky plays bartender for her friend, mixing up a recipe for two wicked hangovers.

“An Officer and a Gentleman” – With Roseanne out of town, Jackie steps in to help Dan with the kids. Shades of “Leave it to Beaver”…(a la Roseanne, of course)

“Born to be Wild” – Dan & Roseanne’s old buddy Ziggy rides into town, bringing nostalgia, revealing Dan’s nickname, and restoring Dan’s hog to its former glory.

“Hair” – Roseanne takes a job in a hair salon full of characters including the owner of the factory most of the town once worked in.

“I’m Hungry” – Tempted by Mallomars and Bucky Burger commercials, Roseanne diets to get her pants to fit better.

“All of Me” – Jackie is crazy about her new man, but Roseanne is worried that she’s losing herself in the deal.

“To Tell the Truth” – Dan convinces Jackie to make up with Roseanne but on her way over to apologize, she gets a proposition from Gary.

“Fender Bender” – Roseanne’s feelings are hurt as well as her neck when Mrs. Wellman rear-ends her and doesn’t apologize until she is threatened by the Conner’s lawsuit.

“April Fool’s Day” – The procrastinating “Wagners” must go down to the IRS office on April 15th to ask a question about their return.

“Fathers and Daughters” – To prove they relate to both children equally, Roseanne bonds with Darlene while Dan takes Becky to the mall.

“Happy Birthday” – Missing her creative side, Roseanne gets a great gift from Dan – the basement is converted into her own private writing studio.

This is Samuel Fuller’s last film, 1989, starring Keith Carradine as a former pop star (wearing overly glam clothes and singing schmaltzy guitar and orchestra 80s pop songs to an adoring audience in flashback) who loses the girl of his dreams and wanders into the life of a drunken bum after getting his vocal cords cut for his dallying with the girl, a mobster’s babe. No cords, no singing. No singing, no money. Et cetera.

Based on a strong hard boiled novel by David Goodis, ca. 1950s, the film is, unfortunately, a travesty of the novel. While the book does a great job of linking Eugene’s (Michael in the movie) descent into the lower depths with the corruption of the world around him–cop and criminal both–the movie short changes the viewer on everything: the plot, the characters, emotional resonance.

The movie was made in Portugal with Portuguese and French actors in most roles, along with Americans Keith Carradine and Bill Duke. In fact, the film feels way too much like it’s a B minus movie made exclusively for the European market, with its truncated, cliched dialogue. You’ve seen these movies before, in which just about all the characters spout dialogue that’s tailor made for actors who struggle with English, since it’s not their native language. Because of that, the script is made up of short lines, easy to memorize and pronounce for non-English speaking folks. This, of course, tends to substantially limit the depth of emotion at any given point in any of these films. And that is, unfortunately, the case with Street of No Return.

Carradine is fine, but he doesn’t have much to do. The book portrays Eugene’s emotions far more deeply than does the film, so that the reader understands–FEELS–how it is that this man could sink so low after the loss of a love. The movie moves through this plot point(s) so abruptly that it’s basically impossible to sympathize with Michael/Eugene; we merely watch him go through the motions of drinking and reacting to stuff as it happens. But even the stuff that happens is cursorily or tritely portrayed. A race riot in the beginning of the film is much too stagey to look credible, for example.

The three stars are for the concept of the film which is great, and also for the extras, principally the terrific 32-minute featurette on the Making of Street of No Return, in which Fuller is interviewed on the set. He’s quite a character and evokes great sympathy, with his strong views on society, violence, and hypocrisy. Moving around the set with an 11-inch cigar in his mouth, he looks like–and was–the last of the legendary maverick directors.

The featurette gets five stars; the film gets about 2 and a half. Hence the three stars for the DVD.

Jean-Luc Godard described Samuel Fuller’s films as “cinema fist,” and that’s certainly true of Fuller’s last film, the underrated _Street of No Return_. A bizarre, fast-moving noirish cocktail of love and death (with an unexpected ending that feels more like fantasy than fact), _Street_ bears the director’s indelible stamp on every frame. The use of Lisbon locations to stand in for an unnamed American city creates a perverse visual poetry out of the production’s budgetary constraints.

Keith Carradine acquits himself well as the film’s male lead, but it’s Bill Duke as a Black police chief who explodes all over the screen. The DVD from Fantoma features a very good video transfer and remixed audio; special features include an atrocious audio commentary from Carradine (couldn’t they have roped a few film scholars into doing this instead?), a text interview with Fuller, and a marvelous new featurette with plenty of screen time devoted to Fuller’s outsized personality.

Fuller’s autobiography _A Third Face_ mentions that, as was often the case with his projects in the ’70s and ’80s, this film was taken out of his hands at the last minute and re-edited. The version of _Street of No Return_ that he intended us to see is probably lost by now. But even in this shortened version, it’s a ripping good swan song. No one before or since has made films like Fuller, and it’s our loss.

This is a classic Sylvester Stallone action movie. It’s one of the best he ever made. Cobra was mostly known for the number of people killed during the movie. It far exceeded any previous record for an action movie…bordering on the comical. Some of the things you’ll remember… The match he keeps in his mouth. His awesome gun. His Mercury which is painfully destroyed during the movie. And the most memorable moment is when he meets up with “Night Slasher” (Brian Thompson) at the end and gets an earful about the judicial system. “They’ll say I’m insane. Won’t they…PIG!?” If ever there was a classic piece of film it’s this encounter. Me and my friends still joke today about how spittle and sweat comes from his mouth when he says, “PIG!”. It’s hilarious. That alone is worth owning this movie. In all, it’s typical of 80′s action films. Sylvester’s films always seem to have a fair amount of cheese in them. It’s a given. At the same time tho, they don’t make films like this anymore. The days of the action hero seem over, but they can be relived with movies like Cobra.

A friend of mine once stated that Cobra was “one of the greatest works of art ever committed to celluloid”. He’s dead now, so I feel okay saying that his comment was patently absurd. Cobra is, in fact, the greatest achievement in human history. More to the point, watching Cobra is like peering into the mind of God.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Cobra! Click Here

Following all the movie’s plot twists and turns is certainly a test of mental acuity, but under the delicate helmsmanship of director George Cosmatos, even a dullard can expect 87 minutes of uninterrrupted rapture. Based on Paula Gosling’s criminally Nobel-overlooked novel “Fair Game”, Cobra explores the fragile struggle between civilized society’s need for a humane justice system versus its innate lust for exacting revenge. In an increasingly violent, hostile, and lonely world, where apocalyptic serial-killing cults are allowed to infiltrate our power structures (in this case, the police force), slaughter our pop icons in parking garages (Peter Cetera), and clink their axes together in abandoned warehouses, where do we draw the line between cruelty and justice? Where Cosmatos stands on this issue is purely speculative, as he tackles the films denouement with characteristic subtlety and restraint: Cobra impales the maniacal cult leader on a hook conveyor to be immolated in a roaring smelting furnace. It’s an ending that will no doubt continue to inspire spirited discourse amongst filmgoers and ethicists for decades to come.

At the center of all this wondrous mayhem is Sylvester Stallone as the hard-boiled “zombie squad” toiler Marion “Cobra” Cobretti. And, surprise surprise!, he is once again at the top of his craft. Here he revolutionizes thespianism with a brilliant new school of character development whereby the actor bypasses the diverse landscape of emotions one would expect from his/her character and instead tenaciously embraces a look of fatigue, angst, and confusion throughout the film’s entirety. It’s a talent only the likes of Burt Reynolds and a young Dolph Lundgren could ever hope to master.

Need romance? Cobra has it in spades. The chemistry between Stallone and damsel-in-distress Brigitte Nielsen recalls classic Tracy-Hepburn and DeVito-Perlman. This is never more evident than in the infamous diner scene, in which Nielsen squirts a viscous lagoon of ketchup on her french fries before an exasperated Cobretti. This stunning use of condiments only hints at the unbearably thick sexual tension between the protagonists and always lights a fire in my shorts.

The only sad note in this film : wardrobe director Tom Bronson’s mind-boggling decision to saddle Cobra’s partner Gonzalez (played by an unbelievably adequate Reni Santoni) with a tweed cap throughout most of the action. Yes, the dapper fez lends some street-cred and authenticity to the role, but it isn’t until a shootout near the end of the film that the heaven that is this man’s gossamer follicles are exposed! Shame on you, Mr. Bronson. Anything less than the unadulterated glory that is Mr. Santoni’s vibrant plumage is a crime in my book!!!

Simply speaking, Lady and the Tramp is my favorite Disney film of all time! In my opinion, it is a 5 star masterpiece, and I would give it more if I could! I remember when I was just 4 years old, watching the characters Lady, Tramp, Jock, Trusty, and the Siamese Cats light up my eyes, as well as my TV screen, as no other movie (except maybe Pete’s Dragon or Superman) has done for me before or since. The music and songs are especially enjoyable, especially “Bella Notte.” And the thrilling climax (which I won’t spoil for the peope who have yet to see it) ranks with the “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Lion King” climaxes! I remember having to wait almost a decade for Disney to re-release this classic on video so that I could replace my worn-out taped version. Now that I have it on both VHS and DVD, and both editions are in widescreen, I can enjoy it for years to come as I never thought I’d be able to! Your kids will love it, and so will anyone who’s still young at heart! Buy it on DVD today! Don’t make the same mistake I did over 10 years ago! (And don’t let the lack of special features stop you, either!)

This movie is about a purebred Cocker Spaniel, who is later named Lady, that is given to the wife of, as Lady refers to him, Jim-dear. She has 2 neighbor dog friends, Jock and Trusty whom she confides in often. As she gets older, Lady’s owner is expecting a baby, in which Lady feels like she is no longer a part of the family. She meets a mutt from the streets, Tramp, who comes by after being chased by the city dog catcher. They meet again after Lady escapes the arms of Aunt Sarah in a pet store because she is buying a muzzle to avoid Lady harming her cats. Tramp comes to her rescue to get the muzzle off and they go for a romantic dinner at Tony’s (spaghetti no less!). They spend some time on the streets, get to know eachother, and come to find they like eachother. Lady realizes that she needs to return home, she does so, and is caught by the city dog catcher, tossed into the pound where she meets Tramp’s “friends”, and is told everything about his street life. When Aunt Sarah retrieves her from the pound, she is then chained up outside to a leaky dog house. Tramp comes by to see her some time after, and she tells him she doesn’t ever want to see him again. Shortly after, Lady notices a rat come into the yard. It goes upstairs into the baby’s room, and Lady tries to stop it, but is still chained up. Tramp hears her barking and comes to see what’s going on. She tells him there is a rat in the baby’s room, he goes into the house, up to the baby’s room, and fights to keep the rat from the baby. He makes a lot of noise in doing so along with knocking over the baby’s crib. Lady gets loose, runs upstairs after Tramp, but Aunt Sarah soon shows up, calling the dog pound to retrieve Tramp, and throw Lady into a room where she cannot get to the baby. As soon as Jim-dear and his wife return from their trip that very same evening, they notice a dog pound carriage outside their house. They run home, ask what happened, let Lady out of the room she was trapped in, and they all go after the dog pound carriage to save Tramp (Trusty getting hurt in the process by following the carriage and knocking it over to save Tramp). Tramp is saved, given a dog license, and a home with Lady and her family. Then they all live happily ever after!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Lady and the Tramp! Click Here

This Disney classic is one you HAVE to own! I’ve loved this movie since I was 2, and I still love it today at the age of 19! There is no better cartoon about dogs than this!! This is a must have!

When the JONNY QUEST DVD Box Set was finally released I was one of the first to buy it. The wait for these fantastic episodes was finally over. And what a long wait its been! What a shame it is then that the “politically correct” people at Warner Brothers found it their duty to EDIT, that’s right, EDIT these classic cartoons! A typical EDIT from DISC ONE “Pursuit of the Po-Ho” A purple Race Bannon confronts the Po-Hos who have Dr. Quest held hostage with,”All right you ignorant savages, get a load of Aquizio you heathen monkeys!” The “REMASTERED” version is a watered down, “Get a load of Aquizio!” All the while Race’s mouth is moving but no words come out! At least no words that some idiots at Warners find offensive. Who are they and how dare they think they can just EDIT someone elses work! What’s even more outrageous is that for some reason they don’t have a problem showing the UN-EDITED versions on their own CARTOON NETWORK! Get it together guys and RE-ISSUE the Jonny Quest Box Set UNTOUCHED, UN-EDITED, and truly REMASTERED as your packaging states! And the next time you think its “your job” to EDIT a classic cartoon, DON”T! Thank GOD your EDIT MONKEY kept his stinking paws off the LOONEY TUNES Box Set!

When I found out that all 26 episodes of the classic Jonny Quest were released on DVD I was stunned. I felt that finally the HB execs are getting it together and recognizing the good stuff. After watching the first two episodes I realized I had been DUPED! Editing dialogue to be PC, using the same ending credits for all episodes and no credit for Doug Wildey. A (…)release of the best classic prime-time animation of the 1960′s.

After I finish watching all the episodes, I’m donating the DVD’s to my local public library. I know better now to read the reviews before buying. I think Warner Brothers and Hana-Barbera owe all of us an explanation for this hack-job. WHY DID THEY HAVE TO DICK WITH IT?

When I pay for DVD’s, I expect the real deal without edits and deception. I can only hope that they fix it with another release with everything intact except the insert commercials. And you can bet they know that we will buy it again. Greedy, corporate pigs!

I own this classic now. I watched the extra features on the DVD and all of the coverage on the other work of Jerry’s . After about a half an hour, I realized there is also a movie on this disk. I could not believe how much material is on this ONE disk. I strongly reccomend this and when you get it, watch it with the commentary track turned on for Jerry’s comments as the show plays. The widescreen DVD format is fabulous. The color and clarity are fantastic, and the big band sound and sound effects are richer than ever.

This Classic film shows the incredible comedic range of Jerry Lewis as a goofy buck tooth professor with an exagerated low self esteem. He finds that one of his gorgeous students Miss Purdy played well by Stella Stevens takes some sort of interest to him. As the professor he stumbles on a potion that can change his genetics into an overly arrogant good looking man who lacks the one thing that would win Purdy over. Sensitivity. The characters name Buddy Love is said by some to have been based on former rat pack partner Dean Martin. Buddy Loves character was an inspiration for comedian Andrew Dice Clay as Dice has said, “Your not here because your Not attracted to me. And you can see I dig you pretty well myself.” Eddie Murphys remake although good could never over shadow this classic comedy. Lewis as Professor Kelp at the prom with his goofy dance steps is hilarious. This movie is timeless and I highly reccomend it to everyone. This movies 1963 release gives you some sense of the simple wholesome lifestyle of the early sixties. As a male I can’t help but fall for Stella Stevens every time. Jerry Lewis proves in this movie he’s a comic genius!

The key things to know about the DVD are:
1) The colors jump off the screen, it is a great transfer
2) The featurette with Adam West (Batman) and Burt Ward (Robin) is good, though they cover a lot of the same ground in the commentary
3) The Batmobile feature is very cool
4) The commentary is awesome. Adam and Burt have a great chemistry and really seem to love both the movie and the show. Their tongues are firmly in their cheeks druing the commentary (Adam West’s views on Bruce Wayne alone are worth the price of admission), but you will learn about the production and such secrets as:
Why did ABC tear down the Batcave so quickly after cancellation?
What did Burt Ward really think about the BatCycle?
How and why did Lee Meriweather get to play Catwoman?
Why did Adam and Burt have to spend two hours each week getting oxygen at the Fox infirmary?
The team at Fox had a lot of love for this movie and it shows. Buy this DVD and get Fox to release some series episodes with Adam, Burt, Julie Newmar (Catwoman) and Frank Gorshin (Riddler)doing commentary!

Who knew that the campy 1960s’ take on the dark superhero Batman would age so well? 39 years later, “Batman: The Movie” still is wholly enjoyable even for the most adrent Batman fan.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Batman – The Movie! Click Here

The plot of the film is paperthin. Batman (Adam West) and his sidekick, Robin (Burt Ward), are out to thwart the four most dangerous villians in Gotham: Catwoman (Lee Meriwehter), The Joker (Cesar Romero), The Penguin (Burgess Meredith) and The Riddler (Frank Gorshin, who recently left us, sadly) from taking over Gotham. To lure Batman into a trap, they kidnap Batman’s secret identity, Bruce Wayne. This is more or less all the plot there is. There’s also somehing about destroying people with a dehyrdator, but other than that, there’s no real plot. And that’s the film’s charm.

It’s a great piece of 1960s’ nostalgia. The “holy (insert random word or phrase here), Batman” schtick is still hilarious, and the cast is clearly enjoying themselves. The extras for the dvd are surpisingly enjoyable. The commentary is awesome and the other extras deliver, but it’s the movie that is really worth watching.

As a pastor ministering in the “Christ-haunted” South, I thought that “Friends of God” gives an accurate image of a religion that justifies American culture and a so-called religious ideology while at the same time, ignores the plight of the poor and the wars that we have created while creating an atmosphere of fear, ignorance and intolerance. For instance, I don’t believe that Jesus would ask us to be “pro-life” while supporting capital punishment and an illegal war at the same time. I don’t believe that Jesus would have us gather to worship in pristine “mega-churches” while our urban areas decay and millions of American children continue to be left behind by both the Democrats and the Republicans. Jesus calls us not merely to worship him, but more importantly, to follow him–not to justify ourselves and our own culture and lifestyle–but to advance the Kingdom of God. By that, he ministered to the poor, downtrodden, and to those on the outside of the mainstream who might be different than us. (Sorry about the short sermon! It’s a great and thought provoking documentary!)

This film plays like a college student’s project. I really liked “Jesus Camp” and I also really like some of Alexandra’s previous work so I thought this would be a good bet. Unfortunately not. Very poorly edited, poorly structured, unfocused, boring, and shallow. Did not offer any additional insights (negative or positive) on the ostensible subject(s). If you are interested in this subject then rent/buy “Jesus Camp” and if you are interested in a solid doc from Ms. Pelosi rent/buy “Journey’s With George.”
