A few years ago I started watching IDOJ for the first time since I was a kid on cable TV reruns. As an adult, I was able to examine many things that simply went over my head as a child. This was actually quite an edgy display by mid 1960′s standards. Oh how I wished this note would be released on DVD, and lo and glance it my wish was granted!

(And, I bought the B&W version because I prize historical accuracy. I want to gaze exactly what was shown on TV attend then, without the lousy TV’s we had wait on then.)

You’ve got a blond bombshell, who is interested to please in every arrangement a man could imagine, living out of wedlock with an astronaut, who represented the most fearless all-american roll models we had abet in the 1960′s. And somehow, for years, this point to provided suitable tidy TV fun for millions of viewers.

Part of why it worked I assure is that Jeannie really wanted to marry Tony, and slowly but surely she broke down his decide not to marry her until toward the demolish of the series, when they actually do catch married. The meta-narrative of the display is that

Jeannie got her wish. (Oh yeah, and she slept in her bottle until she did!)

Is IDOJ really a “knockoff” of Bewitched? Yes and no. I rather deem of IDOJ as an improvement.

For example, the last scene in the pilot has Tony walking into his bedroom and closing the door, Jeannie turning to smoke and entering his bedroom under the door, Tony yelling “Knock it off!!” or something like that, and Jeannie coming serve out from under the door and reappearing with a wink to the camera. It’s all left to the imagination what happened in there and it’s comic!

And that’s where IDOJ is very different from Bewitched. In IDOJ, the hottie with the supernatural powers gets to be sexual, whereas in Bewitched she does not.

In Bewitched, Samantha is the sane one with a world of lunacy around her in which she tries to gain order and survive the crisis of the week. She is usually uptight and in crisis mode and after a while I objective commence to wonder what she ever saw in Darrin in the first state. Also, this formula gets repetitve. I doubt that I’ll ever order the Bewitched series for that very reason: it’s great the same legend every week.

In IDOJ, Tony is the sane one in a world of lunatics, and Jeannie is often fragment of the chaos. Jeannie gets to be shapely, sexual, vivid, mischevious, and most importantly, unpredictable. Will she be fragment of the spot or the solution this week? Or, will she try to be allotment of the solution and instead bring on more chaos? You really don’t know whats coming.

Also, I really be pleased the work that went into some of the props and stunts that often only provided a gag lasting a few seconds. In particular when Jeannie makes herself minute and has to mask in items like coffee cups, pencil holders, and things like that. Those kind of scenes prefer a lot of work to residence up. There’s some capable special effects work in this series beyond objective objects dissappearing and reappearing.

Oh, and one more thing. The DVDs are single sided!! I can actually glimpse at them and eye what disc I’m holding! I can handle them without going into “brain surgeon” mode in order to avoid damaging them! They actually did the packaging correctly! WOW!

So, here you’ve got a properly packaged example of the best that 1960′s sitcoms had to offer, and for under $30. Halt wishing and initiate buying!

Postscript: My one dissappointment with this DVD space is the commentary on the pilot episode. I expected stout things since the commentators would be the main three actors in the cast, but it’s like they didn’t understand the purpose of a commentary or didn’t prepare. Don’t put a question to a lot of additional insights into the series. I tried to glance this with my wife and got so embarrassed for them that we turned it off and unbiased watched the pilot episode without the commentary.

Yay!

IDOJ is finally getting the magic treatment it deserves, the demonstrate will be released in both B&W and color, although only season one was filmed in sad and white. Also be on the leer out for the IDOJ movie starring Jessica alba as Jeannie, Jimmy Fallon as Major Nelson, no word on who will play Dr.Bellows or my approved character on the explain Major Roger Healy.

The Boston Pops Orchestra under such legendary conductors as Arthur Fiedler, John Williams, and Keith Lockhart is an American musical icon. Now WGBH Boston Video has produced a DVD edition of “Broadway’s Best At Pops” showcasing memorable moments enhanced with candid interviews with famed conductors and Broadway personalities drawn from some 35 years of public television musical history. “Broadway’s Best At Pops” features such luminaries as Ethel Merman, Ray Bolger, Kristin Chenoweth, Pearl Baily, Bonnie and John Raitt, Bernadette Peters, Tommy Tune, Carol Channing, Gregory Hines, and dozens of others. Superbly recorded, the DVD format of “Broadway’s Best At Pops” has such bonus features as an additional twenty-five minutes of interviews with John Williams, Michael Feinstein, Barbara Cook, and others; printable selections from new Boston Pops Orchestra concert programs, and extended performances not seen on the fresh television program because of on-air time constraints. with a complete running time of 76 minutes (plus the extra 25 minutes of additional bonus footage), “Broadway’s Best At Pops” is a very highly recommended addition to community library DVD collections and a ‘must’ for the family collections of Boston Pops Orchestra enthusiasts and fans.

First of all I want to admit that I have been a Boston Pops fan for many years. As I live in England I have only have managed to gawk the orchestra twice when they visited these shores – once conducted by Arthur Fiedler and once conducted by Erich Kunzel. These were improbable occasions and it made one feel one should fade to Boston straight away to join in the fun at Symphony Hall. This DVD illustrates my point beautifully with highlights from ‘Evening at Pops’ TV broadcasts by WGBH over a 35 year period. The theme is ‘Pops on Broadway’ and all the performances are fantastic. If I had to hold favourites they would be Tommy Tune,Gregory Hines, Bernadette Peters, Audra McDonald and the shapely Ethel Merman.

But the daddy of them all is the tribute to Leroy Anderson and his procedure of George Gerswhin’s music for ‘Girl Crazy’. One is treated to some unbelievable video editing when three separate recordings conducted by Arthur Fiedler, John Williams and Keith Lockhart are woven into one tour de force performance. Huge stuff and it highlights the exquisite rapport the orchestra has had over the years with their famed conductors. The DVD is worth it for this performance alone.

I would like to waste by making two requests:-

2.To RCA records – Please could you reissue in CD format the two albums

You’ve got a dazzling tight group of girlfriends. You’re a comely tough girl yourself. You do a lot of adventurous stuff that usually includes mostly honest your girlfriends.

After a year’s hiatus due to a unpleasant family tragedy, you determine it’s time to hook up with your girls and shake the poor memories on a spelunking outing.

You head to a remote dwelling of the Appalachian Mountains to some charted caves recommended by a spelunking guide, according to one of your group members. You embark with 6 friends into the caves from the highpoint in the mountain…down…down…down through the bowels of the mountain in search of an exit at a lower point.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Descent! Click Here

Then two of a plethora of awful things happen. A tunnel that you came through is sealed off leaving you only one design to go…down. And your partner reveals the reality that a guide didn’t recommend the caves at all; she notion it would form the excursion more adventurous in unexplored caves. There is no charted procedure out.

Think that’s a scrape? How about shimmering your light down the next tunnel where you gawk an eerie human-ish looking figure crouched in the dusky peering abet at you?

The Descent has chills. There’s high suspense. It goes without saying that there are genuine ancient fashioned jump-out-of-the-dark scares (they are in a cave!) . No special effects needed here to generate excitement. The creatures are well designed and scary.

The tale flows very well. The acting is better than the average Fear flick. And Director Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers) keeps a better than average hotfoot of twists and turns coming.

Do indeed look it if you’re into the genre. The Descent is one of the movies on my Amazon Listmania List, “15 Flicks Guaranteed To Leave A Permanent Impression”.

Note: The US theatrical version had a lame ending compared to the unique UK version. The US DVD release gives you the option of which ending you’d win to concept. Go with the unique.

I’m not typically accustomed to going “gaga” over scare films. It’s not that I don’t like them, I admire them–but truth be told, it’s hard to net genuinely friendly ones. I’m entertained by lots of the gory, splatter films that have recently dominated the box office. Usually, however, it’s a matter of accepting the limitations within these films and getting whatever enjoyment you can out of the scenarios. It’s been a very long time since I conception of a recent dismay movie as a 5 star event, so nothing could have surprised me more than “The Descent.”

The preliminary setup is a marvelous one. Our heroines inaugurate to eye some unknown, uncharted cave systems and speedy become trapped. Now our ladies must exhaust their resourcefulness and intelligence to try to procure out. The dynamics launch to play out between the women–good and bad–and a precise horror for survival starts to status in. We are squarely in a man versus nature psychological thriller atmosphere. It recalls for me “Launch Water”–a film whose alarm is about helplessness and being stranded, not about sharks.

But fair as soon as I was definite where I was headed, the rug was pulled out. The last third becomes a monstrously bloody battle for survival. It is so well choreographed, I was sucked in wholeheartedly. And far from being victims–our heroines demonstrate intelligence, brutality, resilience, loyalty and a proper survival instinct. We’ve got some staunch female empowerment going on! For pure fear, this film goes out with a sincere bang.

I was completely blindsided by this one. There’s a helpful screenplay, a credible backstory, involving actresses, ample cinematography and nice effects.

“The Descent” may not be the “best” movie I stare this year–but as a pure adrenaline speed, I promise you it will be one of my favorites. KGHarris, 12/06.

This is a sweet puny movie starring JEMAINE CLEMENT (of Flight of the Conchords fame) and LOREN HORSLEY (of…being Taika Waititi’s girlfriend fame? ) . Not obvious why Amazon doesn’t have them listed anywhere as the stars…

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eagle vs. Shark! Click Here

The film follows Jarrod (Clement) and Lily’s (Horsley) budding romance, from her crush on him as she works at a speedily food restaurant he frequents, to their hook-up at a dress-as-your-favorite animal party, to visiting his hometown as he takes revenge on someone who bullied him in school. They are unlikely soul mates, bonded by similar facial moles.

The film includes comely shots of the Recent Zealand skim, a limited stop-action animation, and Clement sporting a really choice mullet! Like a lot of stuff that has been coming out of Recent Zealand lately, it is heavy on the quirk but also has some laughable and heartfelt moments. And fans of Clement will luxuriate in a scene in which he is wearing a Speedo.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Eagle vs. Shark! Click Here

You WILL call all of your enemies “foolish, foolish sucka” after seeing this movie!

Lilly (Loren Horsley) works in a fleet food restaurant and garners the respect of no one. But she takes it on the chin and remains curiously sweet. She’s got a crush on Jarrod, a narcissist geek with a putrid mullet played by Jemaine Clement of Flight of the Conchords fame. Jarrod and Lilly hook up at a party one night. (Do you want to have sex? OK.) Jarrod has a mission-to crush a samoan lad who tortured him in school. He returns home to fight his nemesis. I won’t give it away, but the ending to this movie had me laughing hysterically. This is a completely fresh script absent banal comedy and beefy of emotional depth. You won’t glance films like this coming out of Hollywood these days. Thank you Taika and the NZ Film Commission.

Many people have compared Eagle to Napoleon Dynamite, but I derive the comparison lacking. Yes, Lily and Jarrod are geeks, but the similarities with Napoleon kill there. This isn’t a geek revenge movie though the situation may seem like that on the face of it. The movie is titled Eagle vs. Shark but it could be titled man vs. woman. Neither Lily or Jarrod accelerate to each other as solace from the outside world. Lily has a warm home life with her brother and Jarrod is ravishing solidly convinced of his stature and his ability with women until the waste of the movie. It’s inviting to behold how Lily turns Jarod around. This film is about the balance of power between Lily and Jarod, not geeks vs the world.

There are a lot of safe minor characters in this film including Jarrod’s sister and her husband and Lily’s brother. Jarrod’s daughter is played brilliantly by an eccentric runt girl whose name I can’t secure on the DVD. She’s cute to eye. I liked Lorena’s performance. She brings strength to her role as Lily but doesn’t reach off aggressive. It must have been a difficult role to play true.

Good extras on the film including some nice deleted scenes. The commentary with Taika was a miniature off putting. He seems a bit over it. His girlfriend, Lorena Horsely who plays Lily calls from NZ and they talk a bit about the film, but neither one of them seem very into it. It seems like the commentary was added a long long time after the film was made and maybe thrown in because of the success of Conchords. The most intriguing commentary comes from the guy that plays Jarrod’s brother in law. Taika says things like “that scene comes from the Sundance film workshop” but doesn’t clarify what that is or why he was there. Flight of the Conchords fans don’t occupy Eagle to hear any interviews or commentary with Jemaine. He is curiously absent from all the extras here as he was with Conchords. Jemaine seems more over it all these days than anyone. I doubt HBO will score a season 3 out of him unless they throw him excited furious money.

There are a lot of gigantic views of NZ in this film. Loved the camera shot on the playground with Lily running in the mouse wheel with the bay out the assist. Fine. Proper music from the Phoenix Foundation Horsepower, Pegasus that works well with the film. The soundtrack wasn’t chosen for marketing purposes, it actually works with what’s going on in the film.

When I inspect a friendly film like this, completed for under a million dollars, you wonder what is going on in Hollywood these days that more films like this aren’t made. Hollywood is obedient at throwing money into a lot of wearisome scripts with hot actors, but it takes someone like Taika to reach along and point to how a worthy movie is really about a favorable script, not special effects and handsome people.

13. Cartman’s Mom is a Dirty Slut – 25-Feb-1998

This is going to be tremendous! With such episodes as ‘Cartman Gets An Anal Probe’ and ‘Mr. Hankey The Christmas Poo’, you would be crazy not to collect it.

- Pez King

Let me commence out by saying that if this first season of South Park weren’t so vast, I would have given this spot 0 or 1 star.

The 2 main drawbacks to this DVD are: 1) the episode listings by disc that are included on the flaps are not even discontinuance to the sequencing that actually exists on the discs, with some episodes appearing out of order and in 2 cases not even on the same disc as noted; and 2) no chapter-within-eipsode system exists, which is made painfully positive after sitting through the howlingly unfunny “Fireside Chat with Matt (Stone) and Trey (Parker) ” that prefaces each demonstrate. And although the video is quite reliable (due to the fact that there is only about 95 minutes of video on each disc) the sound is far less genuine, filled with many audio “pops” and syncronization issues that were not resolved by swapping out my location for another.

In short, I would like to say that although it is astronomical to survey South Park finally near to the DVD format that allows us to be pleased the animation more, Warner Bros fell far short of even my most meager expectations for what a DVD should be. I am contented I received this as a gift otherwise I might try to track down the Warner’s CEO for my forty bucks aid, and until they upright their glaring technological and quality-control issues they will not contemplate another dime from me on future South Park releases.

Phantom Of The Roller Coaster (Parts 1 & 2) – A mysterious man living beneath an amusement fragment kidnaps a boy, but not all is as it seems. TRIVIA: The year this episode was made, the spotlighted rollercoaster shown debuted at the Warner Bros. owned Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park.

The Man Who Could Not Die – After a scientific experiment, a man discovers that he physically can not be harmed. Can Wonder Woman do him before he becomes a target for injurious groups?

Along with these episodes a featurette focusing on Wonder Woman as a feminist icon will be given. More of the eternally exquisite Lynda Carter and crew’s thoughts on the laughable book heroine. You can’t miss with this colossal, and final, Wonder Woman DVD place!

This last season of Wonder Woman continued the Incredible Amazon’s adventures in 1970′s America. 22 episodes comprise the 1978-79 season.

Notable episodes include “My Teenage Idol is missing” where Wonder Woman helps to crack the kidnapping-switching of a teenage singing idol with an impostor, while “Formicida” has Wonder Woman go against another well-kept powered woman who takes nature preservation to risky extremes through her insect control: bugs are being dispatched to halt the create of a deadly pesticide because this person does not own the pesticide is splendid for the Earth. This latter villian is different from some of the other people Wonder Woman has faced because estimable initial intentions only became warped through extremes.

Wonder Woman also faces a similar ethical remark in “The man who could not die” because she must effect a newly-invincible man from being captured and exploited by unsafe groups. Having superpowers ultimately does not mean distinguished if you are then vulnerable to exploitation from being a public (and ‘everyday’) citizen. Her secret identity as “Diana Prince” might be all that keeps Wonder Woman from facing similar danger.

“A date with doomsday” eerily foreshadows the then-upcoming AIDS pandemic. Wonder Woman must prevent a virus from spreading around the globe. The all-critical area rep being this deadly virus was first created in a laboratory and the HIV virus is rumored to have been created in similar conditions. I wonder if anybody in this series’s scripting department knew anybody affected with what became HIV when this was written?

Unlike a lot of other shows past and expose, the series production team knew when to ruin the point to lest their product become former. The diving suit was wintry, but the wonder skate and bike suits were pushing sci-fi fantasy into 1960′s camp absurdity. I mourned the series cancellation as a young girl, but now understand the wisdom of the television executive decision, Wonder Woman is now timeless for countless generations because somebody knew when to say `enough’.

There’s some playing around with the theme song (adopting a disco influence) but the overall pop culture influence on this series is tolerable and certainly not as dreadful as it could have gotten (even the “Disco Devil” is a carve above other disco-themed series episodes in this era honest because Carter is a superior actress period) . Of her second suits, I judge the wetsuit kicks ass.

Special guest stars this season include Leif Garret, Roddy McDowell, Ted Shackelford and Joan Van Ark. Special features include star Carter’s have commentary on the enduring power of Wonder Woman and her singing (in an episode) . When some other celebrities are dislike to continue being associated with their signature role, Carter’s ongoing warmth to the fans and continued enthusiasm for all things Wonder Woman is really admirable.

I am also thankful that the studios have thoughtfully kept the ticket of the DVD region down around 20 dollars. I can pass on the Shazzam series (one episode is included on a special bonus disc), but having all seasons of Wonder Woman is a mandate from Paradise Island.

Considering how difficult it is to gain Wonder Woman reruns on TV, the incomplete DVD release site of some other 70′s series (Charlies Angels…etc) and the arm-leg cost of other TV seasons on DVD, this select is definitely worth it.

A superb cast and an even-handed treatment of a tru story buoy Into the Wild, Sean Penn’s screen adaptation of Jon Krakaur’s bestselling book. Emile Hirsch stars as Christopher McCandless, scion of a prosperous but troubled family who, after graduating from Atlanta’s Emory University in the early 1990s, decides to chuck it all and become a self-styled “aesthetic voyager” in search of “ultimate freedom.” He certainly doesn’t do it halfway: after donating his substantial savings account to charity and literally torching the rest of his cash, McCandless changes his name (to “Alexander Supertramp”), abandons his family (William Hurt and Marcia Gay Harden as his bickering, cluless parents and Jena Malone as his baffled but loving sister, who relates much of the backstory in voice-over), and hits the road, bound for the Alaskan bush and determined not to be found. For the next two years he lives the life of a vagabond, working a few odd jobs, kayaking through the Grand Canyon into Mexico, landing on L.A.’s Skid Row, and turning his back on everyone who tried to befriends him (including Catherine Keener and Brian Dierker as two kindly, middle-aged hippies and Hal Holbrook in a deeply affecting performance as an old widower who tries to take “Alex” under his wing). Penn, who directed and wrote the screenplay, alternates these interludes with scenes depicting McCandless’ Alaskan idyll–which soon turns out be not so idyllic after all. Settling into an abandoned school bus, he manages to sustain himself for a while, shooting small game (and one very large moose), reading, and recording his existential musings on paper. But when the harsh realities of life in the wilderness set in, our boy finds himself well out of his depth, not just ill-prepared for the rigors of day to day survival but realizing the importance of the very thing he wanted to escape–namely, human relationships. It’d be easy to either idealize McCandless as a genuinely free spirit, unencumbered by the societal strictures that tie the rest of us down, or else dismiss him as a hopelessly callow nalf, a fool whose disdain for practical realities ultimately doomed him. Into the Wild does neither, for the most part telling the tale with an admirable lack of cheap sentiment and leaving us to decide for ourselves. –Sam Graham

Joe 90 was Gerry Anderson’s penultimate puppet show of the 1960s, following Captain Scarlet (1967) and preceding the little-known The Secret Service (1969). In 2112, professor Ian McClaine has invented the BIG RAT (Brain Impulse Galvanoscope, Record and Transfer), a machine for copying knowledge and experiences from person to person. WIN (World Intelligence Organization) uses this to prime their top undercover agent before sending him into the field on missions that range from foiling international terrorists to recovering a nuclear weapon from beneath the polar ice. So far so good, but in perhaps the most mind-boggling concept ever to reach children’s TV, that agent is McClaine’s 9-year-old adopted son, Joe.

Somehow even as it stays tru to the Gerry Anderson techno-fantasy formula of secret organizations, gadgetry, and action-packed adventure full of spectacular explosions and violent death, Joe 90 remains blithely unconscious of its own implications. The missions are as globe-trotting as anything in Anderson’s classic Thunderbirds series, and sometimes Joe does save lives, performing a risky brain operation or rescuing trapped astronauts. Yet even then his criminally irresponsible father brainwashes the lad each episode before placing him in a highly dangerous adult situation. Though the production valus remain way ahead of anything else being done on British TV at the time, the qustion remains: how did this ever seem like a good idea?

Joe 90 comes complete in a four-disc boxed set of the entire 30-episode series. The 25-minute episodes are presented in superb picture quality and full, detailed mono sound. Extras include commentaries on two episodes, character biographies, a photo gallery, and varied extras such as location stills. –Gary S. Dalkin

This ambitious 1979 Russian film attempts no less a feat than the encapsulation of the tumultuous history of Russia in the 20th century. Written and directed by Andrei Konchalovsky (Runaway Train, Tango and Cash), the film weaves an engrossing tale of three generations of two Russian families in the remote region of Siberia, each trying in their own way to find fulfillment in their lives as they seek to reconcile themselves with the ever-changing landscape of their homeland. Sandwiched between the chaotic events of the First and Second World Wars, as well as the Russian Revolution of 1917, the people of the small village find themselves at the cusp of great changes, from communications to the expanding infrastructure and the changes that brings, to the discovery of oil and the riches and perils that come with it. Konchalovsky juxtaposes archival footage with stunning cinematography and contrasts the assaultive changes of the modern world with the timeless impulses of family and the enduring need to adapt and survive. Reminiscent of such great films as Giant and 1900, Siberiade is a visually adept and stunningly effective epic about the price of a country’s history on its people. –Robert Lane
